Parents-for-Parents: Meeting #2
On October 3, 2012, "Crocus" organized the second Parents-for-Parents meeting with guest speaker Vladimir E. Kryzhanivsky, Chairman of "Aurveda" Society for Disabled Children and their Parents (http://edu.aurveda.org.ua/). "Aurveda" has experience implementing inclusive education for special needs students in a school in Bila Tserkva, Kyiv region. Vladimir came to Kolomyia to share his experiences and to speak to the parents of special needs children about the importance of inclusive education. Special needs children need to attend school with other children, not to stay at home and receive a secluded, individual education. This is the first step to becoming part of an integrated society.
There were a total of 18 parents that came to this meeting. "Crocus" has organized a series of these Parents-for-Parents meeting to allow parents to meet each other, exchange ideas/information, and to help support each other. There will be four more meetings scheduled in the coming months.
This project was funded by a Peace Corps SPA Grant.
Materials folder for each parent.
Printed materials including a guide “Raising our Disabled Children: A Parental Guide” produced by "Aurveda" Society for Disabled Children and their Parents in Bila Tserkva (with the help of U.S. Peace Corps volunteer Maria Noyes)
Each parent was to write the name of their special needs child at the center of a sun. The parents were then instructed to write the names of 8 individuals that helps to support their child. This was an exercise to illustrate to the parents that they have a whole "army" of supporters in the community.
The Director of the Kolomyia Teacher's College greeting our parents.
It was an informative, and sometimes, emotional meeting. The parents were able to get acquainted with each other, understand the importance of inclusive education, and help each other in the future. "Crocus" will be organizing future Parents-for-Parents meetings.
